Day to day

Day 1

Start your Mountains and Lakes rail tour from any location in Switzerland and travel by train to Interlaken, nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Continue by PostBus along a narrow road to Isentwald, an authentic Swiss village on a peninsula in Lake Brienz. Stay at Hotel Strand***, located on the shores of the lake, and enjoy the sundeck and the beautiful scenery.

It is possible to add train tickets to Switzerland to your booking. Additional fees applicable.

Day 2

A free day in Iseltwald. Spend your day relaxing by the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz or take a walk to the thundering Giessbach Falls. Another option is to visit the Brienzer Rothorn, by cogwheel train, for impressive mountain panoramas. The hike from the summit down to Brünig is a famous hike among the Swiss.

Day 3

Take the ferry right from the hotel to Brienz (outside the period 9 April - 19 Oct, travel by PostBus via Interlaken) and continue by train across the Brünig Pass to Lucerne. In Lucerne, famous for its Chapel Bridge, take another ferry across beautiful Lake Lucerne to Vitznau from where you will travel the last stretch of the day by cogwheel train up to Rigi Kaltbad. Rigi Kaltbad is a car-free village at an altitude of 1400 meters. Stay the night at Hotel Alpina***, located a short walk from the station.

Day 4

A free day in Rigi-Kaltbad. If you are looking for stunning views, train to Rigi Kulm, the highest peak of Mount Rigi, or enjoy a gentle hike to the Känzeli lookout. If you prefer relaxation, visit the famous Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths & Spa or make a day trip to Medieval Lucerne.

Day 5

The rail tour continues with a decent to the lake and a ferry ride to Flüelen. In Flüelen, hop onboard the panoramic train Gotthard Panorama Express* to Bellinzona. Change trains in Bellinzona and continue to Locarno in the Canton of Ticino, where Italian is the official language. Spend the night in Hotel Geranio Au Lac***, located on Lake Maggiore.

*The Gotthard Panorama Express runs from 18 April until 18 October 2020 on a daily basis, except Mondays. In case you are travelling on a Monday, you will take regional trains to Locarno changing in Erstfeld and Bellinzona.

Day 6

A free day in Locarno. Enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere of the city. Relax at the waterfront, take a boat ride on Lake Maggiore or explore Castello Visconteo, a castle dating back to the 12th century. It is also possible to visit Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore, to enjoy stunning views of the Alps, Lugano and the lake named after it.

Day 7

Take the scenic Centovalli Railway through the Hundred Valleys region to Domodossola in Italy (sit on the left side for the best views). From Domodossola travel by direct train back into Switzerland and continue to the French-speaking city of Lausanne. Spend the night at Hotel Au Lac ***, beautifully situated on Lake Geneva and a short walk from the railway station.

Day 8

The final day of your rail tour will take you back to where you have started your journey (or where you wish to travel to). In case it fits your itinerary, travel along another beautiful Swiss lake: Lake Neuchâtel, situated between Lausanne and Biel.

It is possible to add train tickets to an international destination to your booking. Additional fees applicable.

Add-on Niesen (8 May - 8 Nov)

Niesen is a unique and small-scale mountain lodge (2362m) with 360-degree views on the Bernese Highlands (Simmental, Kandertal and Lake Thun). Watching the sunrise and sunset from here is a magical experience. There are no wintersports activities on offer, but plenty of walking trails. If you are feeling adventurous you could take the challenging stairway which runs along the cog railway up the mountain. With its 11,674 steps it is considered the world's longest stairway. Plan a visit to the "off the beaten track" Niesen mountain, fondly called the "Swiss Pyramid" for it's perfect triangular shape, and enjoy the beautiful panorama.

The Niesen mountain lodge is open from the 8th of May till the 8th of November 2020. In the months May und June, the lodge is closed on Mondays.

Excursion Jungfraujoch (3454m)

The Jungfraujoch railway station is Europe’s highest at 3454m above sea level. Our recommendation: travel via Lauterbrunnen when going up and via Grindelwald when coming down. The journey via Lauterbrunnen/Wengen starts off with spectacular views on the waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley. After crossing the tree line the imposing Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks emerge. The Jungfraubahn runs through the Eiger north face, past the Eiger glacier station at 2320m and through a tunnel to Jungfraujoch station at 3454m.

On the Jungfraujoch, the scenery and panoramic views will take your breath away. You are invited to visit the Glacier Ice Palace (included in the price) or take part in various sorts of wintersports activities (for an extra fee). It is possible to hike in an hour to the Mönchsjochhütte as well, the highest serviced mountain refuge in Switzerland. Hiking boots recommended!

The regular price of a Jungfraujoch excursion is €210 p.p.

To fully enjoy this excursion, we recommend you to take it easy and add an extra night's accommodation.
