Day to day

Day 1 Edinburgh

The rail tour starts in Scotland's capital Edinburgh. Discover Edinburgh's fascinating history and take your time to explore the Medieval streets of the old town. Visit the Royal Mile, the Edinburgh Castle and Calton Hill for impressive panoramic views of the city.

Overnight stay Edinburgh, in a hotel in the city centre.

It is possible to add train tickets to Scotland to your booking. Additional fees applicable.

Day 2 Oban

On today's programme is a beautiful train journey from Edinburgh via Glasgow and along Loch Lomond to Oban on the West Coast.

Overnight stay in Oban. The Royal Hotel is located close to the harbour.

Day 3 Isle of Mull / Oban

Free day in Oban. Spend the day in town or take a day trip to the Isle of Mull. On Mull, the colourful capital Tobermory should not to be missed. A visit to the small island of Iona is also recommended.

Overnight stay in Oban.

Day 4 Fort William

Continue by train across the boggy moorland of Rannoch Moor to Fort William.

In Fort William spend the night in Guisachan House. A lovely hotel with views on Loch Linnhe and the surrounding mountains.

Day 5 Portree (Isle of Skye)

Finish the final stretch of the famous West Highland Line, one of Scotland's most scenic railways connecting Glasgow with the ports of Oban and Mallaig. Cross the beautiful Glenfinnan Viaduct, travel past stunning Glenns and enjoy the impressive scenery of the Scottish Highlands. In Mallaig take the ferry to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. There is time to visit the Armadale Castle and its wonderful gardens. Continue by bus across the rugged island to Portree.

Overnight stay in a guest house in Portree.

It is also possible to travel from Fort William to Mallaig by Jacobite steam train. The Jacobite runs between April 6 - April 12, April 13 until October 23 2020 on Monday to Friday, and between May 2 to September 27 2020 also on Saturdays and Sundays. The Jacobite journey can be added to the rail tour in the next step of the booking process.
First class Jacobite travellers can only book a return journey. Back in Fort William, continue by direct bus to Portree. The bus will cross the Skye Bridge to reach the Isle of Skye rather than taking the ferry from Mallaig.

Day 6 Inverness

Travel by bus to Kyle of Lochalsh and continue by train to Inverness. Very scenic journey.

Overnight stay in Inverness.

Day 7

Return by train across the beautiful Highlands to Edinburgh.

It is possible to add train tickets to a domestic or international destination to your booking. Additional fees applicable.

  • In case of an additional night in either Fort William or Inverness, it is possible to visit Loch Ness by bus. The rail pass used for the tour can also be used for this bus journey, no additional costs.
  • Overnight stays in other cities (also outside Scotland) before or after rail tour can be added as well

Unfortunately, these are not available for UK residents. We are still able to create our Scotland tours for UK residents by booking most transport in advance. However, tickets for certain ferries and buses included in the tour will have to be purchased on location. Please contact us for more information or an exact quote.

Overnight stay Glasgow

Glasgow is Scotland's largest city with a vibrant centre packed with sights and shops. Visit the Glasgow Cathedral or the modern Riverside Museum and go for a walk along the River Clyde. Stay in a centrally located hotel, breakfast included.

Three Isles Tour

Visit the three most beautiful island on the Scottish West Coast: Mull, Staffa and Iona.
In the morning (around 09:50) take the ferry from Oban to Craignure on the Isle of Mull. Continue by bus to Fionnphort for the connecting ferry to the unhabited island of Staffa. Visit the impressive sea cave 'Fingal's Cave' on the island. By ferry to Iona, where the St Oran's Chapel and the Iona Abbey are worth a visit. There is time for lunch on Iona. Arrive back in Oban around 20:00 in the evening.

The Three Isles Tour is offered on a daily basis in the period 29.03 - 13.10.2019.

Skye Bus Tour

The best tour of the Isle of Skye! Departure from the central square in Portree in the morning. For the tour, a 16-person van is used so that the narrow back roads on the island can be taken. 

The tour includes a visit to:
- Fairy Pools
- Fairy Glen
- Kilt Rock
- Old Man of Storr
- Cuillin Mountains
- Quiraing
- Nest Point Lighthouse (or Dunvegan Castle as an alternative - admission GBP12 p.p.)
Some of the sights on the tour are visited by foot. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes and 'windbreaker' clothes. It is possible to take shorter walks or wait alternatively (and enjoy the stunning scenery).

In the afternoon, a lunch stop is scheduled close to a cafe. Return to Portree between 18:00 and 19:00. 

The Skye Bus tour is offered on a daily basis from 29.03 untill 19.10.2019.

Loch Ness Excursion (following day from 10:00 to 14:00)

From Inverness travel by bus to the world famous Loch Ness. Enjoy a 30-min boat ride across the lake (keep an eye out for Nessie) and visit beautiful Urquhart Castle and the Loch Ness Exhibition Center. Return to Inverness by bus.
The tour takes 4 hours in total, from 10:00 to 14:00.

An additional night in Inverness is required for this add-on.
