Possibilty to take the train (short distance by cable car) to the summit of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain of Germany. Great views of the Alps, and when lucky four different countries!
Travel by train on the Mittenwald railway from Germany to Innsbruck in Austria. Change trains and continue towards the Stubaital. The train to the valley looks like an ordinary city tram. Yet, after leaving town it slowly winds into the mountains to its destination Fulpmes. In the summer season, travellers will receive a Stubaitalcard which includes the free use of public transport and all cable cars in the valley. Overnight stay in Fulpmes.
Day 3 and 4
In the morning there is time to explore the valley. For instance, take the cable car from Fulpmes to Kreuzjoch (2136m). From here it is a 15 minute walk to the viewing point Stubaiblick.
Return to Innsbruck by train on the Stubai valley railway and board the international train to Italy. The train crosses the border at the Brenner Pass. Disembark in Bolzano and take the cable car to the plateau / Alpine meadow situated above the capital of South Tyrol. From the cable car there are beautiful views of the surrounding villages and vineyards. Once on the plateau, in Soprabolzano, take the train towards Klobenstein / Collalbo and get off at the tiny station of Lichtenstern. Overnight stay in Hotel Lichterstern with sundeck, pool and great views. Rittencard for free use of public transport in the area is included in the price (you can use it the extra day).
Descend to the station in Bolzano and continue by train to Merano, well-known for its spa resorts. Merano is a pleasant town with a Mediterranean feel to it. Continue towards Mals by train, enjoying the beautiful mountain views. Fruit grows very well in the valley thanks to its sheltered location, explaining all the orchards that can be seen from the train. Travel past castles and follow the Adige river to Mals.
In Mals, take the PostBus across the Fuorn Pass to Zernez in the Engadin in Switzerland. Last journey of the day is by train again to Bever, centrally located in the Upper Engadin. Overnight stay in the Bever Lodge, opposite the train station. Beautiful area ideal for day trips. Free use of public transport (in summer 13 mountain railways!) in the Upper Engadin included when staying 2 nights or more.
The final day of your rail tour will take you back to where you have started your journey (or where you wish to travel to - as long as it is in one of the countries you travelled through during the rail tour).
It is possible to add train tickets to a different international destination to your booking. Additional fees applicable.
